Carlos Alvarez, chairman and CEO of The Gambrinus Co., has contributed $2 million to Texas Public Radio.

Alvarez's gift, the largest TPR has received in its 30-year history, will go a long way toward helping the nonprofit media organization move its headquarters and broadcast facilities to the Alameda Theater complex in downtown San Antonio.

TPR plans to redevelop space in the stage house portion of the Alameda complex on West Houston Street. One of the prominent features of the center city site will be the Carlos and Malú Alvarez Theater, a black box venue that will be central to TPR’s vision for hosting community conversations, political forums and cultural performances.

“Making San Antonio our home was an extraordinarily fortunate decision for our family,” said Alvarez, whose company counts Spoetzl Brewery, maker of Shiner beers, among its holdings. “Being now able to contribute to TPR’s building of its new home is very gratifying.”
